License types and what each includes

Every display consumes one license from your account's pool. The license determines which features that screen can use.

The display types

A display record is one of two types, set when it is created:

  • Signage — a screen that plays content.
  • Kiosk — an interactive STQRY Kiosk installation. Kiosk is a separate product and isn't covered in this documentation.

A Signage display takes a Signage license; a Kiosk display takes a Kiosk license. You can't mix them.

In short, Basic includes everything except the location-aware features. If your screens stay in one place — a lobby, a gallery, a visitor centre — Basic is all you need. If they're on the move — a tour bus, a boat, a train — go with Standard.

On a Basic license, a display works as a player only. It can't use location programs, location sources, or share its position with other displays — those are Standard features.

Your license tier is managed by STQRY. If you'd like to upgrade a display from Basic to Standard, just reach out to your assigned Customer Success Manager.

Assigning a license

To assign a license, head to Displays in your account, find the display you want, and click the Assign license action. Builder will show how many licenses you have available — for example, You are using 7 out of 10 Signage licenses. Once assigned, the display's edit dialog will show Licensed: Yes.

Licenses are drawn from an account-wide pool.

If you have none left, either free one up by removing the license from a display you no longer use, or contact STQRY to add more.

To free up a license, go to the display settings and toggle off the License option, then choose Remove License. The display will continue to play but with a watermark. In Builder, unlicensed displays are marked with a red warning icon beside their activation key, making them easy to identify at a glance.

Changing a display's type

A display's type — Signage or Kiosk — is set when the record is created and isn't something you switch later. If you need a screen to change role, create a new display record of the right type and connect the device to that one instead, using its activation key.
