Regions and activation keys

Two small pieces of information identify a display: the region your account lives in, and the display's six-character activation key. Together they form the address of a screen.

Activation keys

Every display record in STQRY Builder has an activation key — six characters, letters and numbers. The device calls it the same thing, so the value you read in Builder is the one you type on the screen.

It is not a license. A license is the entitlement a display consumes from your account's pool — see License types and what each includes.

The activation key identifies the display; the license pays for it.

The key is permanent for the life of the display record. It does not change when you rename the display, move it to a different project, or reassign its content.

You'll find it on the display record in Builder, and on the device in the settings overlay under Diagnostics.

The activation key identifies the display record. The device calls the same value an activation key.

Where you use it

  • Connecting a device manually instead of using a screen code.
  • Replacing failed hardware while keeping the same display record.
  • Quoting a specific screen to STQRY support.

Activation keys aren't sensitive credentials, but they do identify a specific screen. On public-facing displays — like screens on a bus — the key is automatically masked so it isn't visible to passersby.

Regions

STQRY runs several independent regional clouds. Your account lives in exactly one of them, and a display has to be told which one, because an activation key from one region means nothing in another.

Six regions are available:

RegionShown as API host
usUnited States (US)api-us.stqry.com
caCanada (CA)api-ca.stqry.com
auAustralia (AU)api-au.stqry.com
euEurope (EU)api-eu.stqry.com
gvGovernment (GV)api-gv.stqry.com
sgSingapore (SG) api-sg.stqry.com

Each region also has its own media CDN — for example us-images-cdn.stqry.com and us-uploads-cdn.stqry.com for the US.

Which region am I in?

Check the URL of STQRY Builder when you're logged in — the region code appears in the address. For example, beta-us.stqry.com means you're in the US region, while beta-eu.stqry.com means Europe. If you're unsure, contact STQRY support. If you only have one account, you only have one region, and it doesn't change.

Why it matters

Three practical consequences:

Connecting a display manually. Pick the wrong region and the activation key won't resolve — you'll get an invalid-credentials message even though the key is correct.

Firewall and proxy rules. If your network filters outbound traffic, allow your region's API host and its two CDN hostnames. Allowing *.stqry.com covers all of them.

Data residency. Your media and your display records stay in your region's cloud.

When you adopt a display with a screen code, the region is filled in for you — the code already knows which account claimed it.

The display URL

Put together, a display's address looks like this:

https://signage-ng.stqry.com/us/license/K4M2XP

It combines the region (us), the word license, and the activation key (K4M2XP)

You only ever need to type this if you're running Signage in a web browser, or setting up a device from the command line. Every app build constructs it for you from the region and key you enter on the provisioning screen.

Some setups use a further path segment for the visitor audio companion — see The audio companion QR code.
