How to Set Up Beacons on STQRY

Created by Natalie Nguyen, Modified on Thu, 22 Aug at 9:35 AM by Natalie Nguyen

Content on STQRY can be triggered using either GPS or beacons, each offering distinct advantages. GPS is a seamless, cost-effective option ideal for broader location-based triggers. However, when you need precise content activation within close proximity, beacons are the preferred choice.

A beacon is a small device that transmits a Bluetooth signal at regular intervals. This signal follows a specific communication protocol, typically either iBeacon or Eddystone. STQRY supports the iBeacon protocol, making beacons highly effective for proximity-based triggers, with accuracy often within 1 meter.

Configuring Your Beacon Hardware:

Configuring your beacon hardware is beyond the scope of this help article. Please refer to your beacon manufacturer's instructions for detailed setup guidance. Most manufacturers provide an app for setting the UUID, major, and minor values.

You can purchase iBeacons from various suppliers, including directly from us. If you choose to buy iBeacons through us, an additional fee will apply for shipping and ongoing support.

Here’s how to set up your iBeacons if you purchase them from us:

1. First, navigate to this address and create an account: https://app.cloud.us.kontakt.io/register
2. Send us the username you enrolled with so we can transfer the devices to your ownership
3. Download the Kio Setup Manager App to a trusted smart device:

Once the devices are on site, continue with these steps:

4. Synchronize your devices: This Kontakt help article will help guide you through using the app to sync the devices
5. Establish Major, Minor, and UUID in the builder- see below instructions.

6. Begin testing triggering ranges with the Setup Manager
7. Once your distances are suitable, you’re all set!

Setting Up Beacons in the STQRY Builder:

1. Log in to STQRY Builder:

Access your STQRY Builder account at https://builder.stqry.com.

2. Upload Content and Set Up a Tour or List:

Ensure that the content you wish to trigger via beacons is uploaded and associated with a tour or a list.

3. Edit a Marker:

Navigate to the Tour Map or List Map section.

Click on the pencil icon for the marker you want to link to a beacon.

Fill Out the Beacon Information

  • Major: Major values are intended to identify and distinguish a group—for example, all beacons in a venue could be assigned a unique Major value. If you are a single location organisation then set this to the same number.
  • Minor: Minor values are intended to identify and distinguish an individual—for example distinguishing specific beacons within a group of beacons assigned a Major value. Usually, we set the minor to the stop numbers.
  • UUID: UUID (Universally Unique IDentifier, UUID for short). When you receive your beacons, they will all have a common proximity UUID set, which will look something like: f7826da6-4fa2-4e98-8024-bc5b71e0893e. You should set all of your beacons to be the same UUID.
  • Distance: Select the proximity category as follows: "Immediate" for distances less than 1 meter, "Near" for distances less than 3 meters, and "Far" for distances of 3 meters or more. Alternatively, you can fill out an exact distance. Note that beacon triggering can be affected by many things. We recommend onsite testing after configuring these settings.

Once the setup is complete, contact our support team to provide a new app build that includes your beacon configuration.

Beacons only work with native apps, not the web version.

You can test the devices using our STQRY Preview app. If you’ve already set up Google and Apple developer accounts, we can also create a test app for you.

If you have any questions or need assistance with your beacon setup, please don't hesitate to reach out to our support team at [email protected]. Happy app building!
