Open the on-device settings overlay

Every display has a settings panel you can open on the screen itself, behind a PIN. Use it to reload a display, check which activation key it's using, turn the audio companion QR on, or disconnect the display from your account.

Open the overlay

Three routes open the overlay, depending on what the device has.

  • Touchscreen or pointer: tap or click five times in the bottom-right corner within three seconds.

  • Keyboard: press Esc.
  • Remote control: press Up five times within three seconds.

The hotspot is invisible and covers roughly the bottom-right fifteen percent of the screen. The five-tap route works on an iPad, an iPhone and a Mac too.

Note: On Apple devices, the two-finger long press and Configure Display… (⌘,) are the reset gesture. They disconnect the display from your account. They do not open these settings.

See Resetting the display below.

Enter the PIN

A PIN prompt appears before the settings themselves. The keypad is navigable with a D-pad, so it works on a remote.

The PIN entry keypad with masked digits on the settings overlay

Digits are masked, because a wall-mounted display gets read over shoulders.

  • Digits are masked as you type.

  • A wrong PIN clears the field and shows Incorrect PIN. Try again.
  • The prompt closes itself after 60 seconds with no keypress. The timer restarts on every keypress, so taking your time doesn't cut you off.
  • There's a Cancel key on the pad, because a remote has no reliable Escape.

Where the PIN comes from

The PIN is a project setting, pushed to every display in the project. Your Customer Success Manager (CSM) provides the PIN when the project is set up. There's currently no field for it in Builder, so if you don't know yours, contact your CSM or the STQRY support team.

Once a display has received its PIN it remembers it permanently, with no expiry. A screen that's been offline for a month still knows its PIN.

What's in the overlay

The panel is titled Display settings and holds four things.

Everything you can change on the device itself.

Show QR code for audio companion

This checkbox turns on the QR code visitors scan to hear the display's audio on their own phone.

It's a per-device setting, remembered on that device, so two screens showing the same playlist can differ. See The audio companion QR code.

Location source

Location source sets where this display gets its position, for location programs.

  • Mode: Use configured / None / Device GPS / Server URL

  • Server URL
  • Poll interval (seconds)
  • Effective: a readout of what's actually in force

Choosing Use configured clears all three device overrides and hands control back to Builder. Reload the display to apply location changes.

On a device driven by a remote these fields are read-only. The effective values are shown, but a D-pad can't reasonably type a URL, so set those from Builder. See Set a display's location source.

Diagnostics

Diagnostics is read-only, and it's the first thing to look at when something's wrong. Quote these when you contact support.

  • Display: the project name

  • Activation key: this display's activation key
  • Region
  • App version

Reload display and Change activation key

Reload display reloads immediately rather than waiting for the next content check. Use it after making a change in Builder that you want to see right now.

Change activation key disconnects this display and returns the device to the provisioning screen. From there it can be adopted again or given a different activation key. This is the destructive one, and it's the reason the overlay sits behind a PIN.

Close the overlay

Click the ×, or click outside the panel. On a remote, navigate to Close.

Reset the display

Every platform has a reset gesture built into the app itself, separate from the settings overlay. It does the same thing as Change activation key. It disconnects the display and returns it to the provisioning screen, and it works even when the overlay won't open.

PlatformGesture
Remote controlHold OK / Select for five seconds
iPad, iPhoneA two-finger long press
MacConfigure Display… (⌘,)
Android with a touchscreenA long press

Every one of these asks for the PIN first. None of them opens the settings overlay.

One exception. A display with no PIN known anywhere resets directly, without asking. That's a screen whose page has never successfully loaded, so it was never sent a PIN. It's the break-glass case, for a device that can't get far enough to show you anything.

Note for runbooks. "Hold Select to re-pair" is accurate only for that second case. Any display that has been online long enough to receive its PIN will ask for it first.

See Using a remote control.

Good to know

  • On iOS the reset gesture is two fingers rather than one, because a single-finger long press is claimed by the system for text selection.

  • Up is the remote's route in because it's the only free D-pad direction. Left and Right step through content languages.
  • The Menu button doesn't reliably reach the app on the platforms this runs on, so it isn't used.

FAQ

The overlay doesn't open. What should I check?

Check you're within the three-second window, since five taps or presses need to be quick. On an iPad, check Guided Access isn't running and exit it first.

I don't know the PIN.

Contact STQRY support.

The PIN prompt closes while I'm finding the PIN.

It times out after 60 seconds of no keypress. Press any digit to restart the timer while you look.

The location fields are greyed out.

The device is in remote-control mode, where they're read-only by design. Set them in Builder.
