Set up a Samsung Tizen or LG webOS panel

Commercial signage panels from Samsung and LG run STQRY Signage natively — no external player box, no extra cabling, no second thing to fail. If you already own professional panels, this is usually the tidiest setup there is.

What you need

  • A Samsung commercial display running Tizen 2.3 or later, or
  • An LG commercial display running webOS.
  • A network connection to the panel.
  • Us, or your AV integrator, to install the app.

How installation works

The app isn't available from the panels' own app stores. Samsung and LG commercial panels are provisioned with manufacturer tooling — Samsung's MagicINFO or Tizen Studio, LG's webOS TV SDK or Business Cloud — and the STQRY Signage package is installed onto the panel through that.

In practice that means one of:

  • We install it — send us the panel's model and network details and we'll arrange it.
  • Your AV integrator installs it — they'll have the tooling already if they commission commercial displays regularly. Contact us for the package.

Once installed, the app behaves exactly like it does everywhere else: it shows a screen code, you adopt it in Builder, and it plays your content.

Step 1: Prepare the panel

Before the app goes on, set up the panel itself.

Network. Wired Ethernet if the panel has a port — commercial panels are often in places with poor Wi-Fi, and a sign that drops out is worse than a cable run.

Power on behavior. Set the panel to power on automatically when mains power is restored, and to launch its installed app on startup. Both manufacturers call this something different; on Samsung look under System → Auto Power On and the MagicINFO launcher settings, on LG under General → Quick Start and the app auto-launch setting.

Auto power schedule. If the screen should be off overnight, set the on/off schedule on the panel rather than in Signage. A panel that powers itself down saves energy and extends the backlight's life; a Signage schedule showing a black image does neither.

Screen saver / pixel shift. Commercial panels often have anti-burn-in features that shift the image or dim static areas. Leave these on — they're doing their job, and signage content is exactly what burns a panel in.

Orientation. Set it on the panel. Samsung's commercial panels are frequently mounted portrait and have a rotation setting for exactly that. STQRY Signage follows the panel and locks nothing.

Step 2: Adopt the display

Once the app is installed and running, it shows a screen code. In STQRY Builder, go to Displays → Adopt display and type it in.

Then set the display's project, timezone, license and content. See Connect a display to your account.

Using the panel's remote

Commercial panel remotes usually have a D-pad, which means the standard remote controls work:

InputWhat it does
Left / RightStep through content languages.
Up five times in three secondsOpens the settings overlay, behind a PIN.
OK held for five secondsAsks for the PIN, then resets the display.

See Using a remote control.

If the panel has a touch overlay, five taps in the bottom-right corner opens the settings overlay too.

Portrait mounting

Samsung panels in particular are often mounted vertically, and this is fully supported. Set the rotation on the panel; the app follows it.

This wasn't always true — earlier versions pinned landscape, which rendered a portrait-mounted panel sideways with nothing the installer could do about it. That's fixed. If you see a portrait panel showing rotated content, the app is out of date; contact us about an update.

Resolution

LG webOS panels declare 1920×1080 to the app. Samsung panels report their own resolution. Either way the app scales to what it's given and images are fetched at the right size — there's nothing to configure.

Updates

Panels don't update themselves from an app store, so a new version of STQRY Signage reaches a Samsung or LG panel only when someone installs it. Contact us to arrange an update.

Your content updates normally, over the network, without anyone touching the panel. See How updates reach your displays.

Troubleshooting

The panel shows a black screen after power on. Check the panel is set to launch its installed app at startup, and that it powers on automatically after a power loss. Both are panel settings, not app settings.

Content is rotated the wrong way. Set the panel's own rotation. If it's already correct and the picture is still sideways, the app needs updating.

The panel is showing its own default screen or input menu. The app isn't running. Check the auto-launch setting.

Content won't load. Check the panel's network settings first, then see Troubleshooting a display.
